This house is located in “Bangkru community” – the low cost land development project for Rung Aroon School and Arsom Silp Institute of the Arts personnel, surrounded with canals and lagoons. Initially, the house was designed on the objective of health recovery for “Ah-Ma” (grandmother in Chinese language), the grandfather’s wife and mother of children in the orchardist background extended family who was suffering from paralysis. During construction preparation in 2011, “Ah-Ma” passed away while the family had a terrify experience of the Bangkok great flood at their old house. This resulted in the revision of the objective by the owner and design team. The new agreed objective was;

1. Baan Kong… supports “Kong” (grandfather in Chinese language) as the guardian of the family. After “Ah-Ma” passed away, “Kong” – the 80 years old father became the mere leader of the family. The design strategy, therefore, was to mentally and physically support him to continue his role as the leader and guardian of the family.

2. Baan Kong… consistent way of life on the waterfront in harmony with the water. From flood disaster experiences, designers and owner had to think about how the design should take greatest advantage of water feathers as an important design strategy for indoor built environment. While flooding problems have to be prevented.

3. Baan Kong… the root and center of family’s heart and soul To embed the orchardist background extended family, bonded by warm relationship and Thai traditional culture, the designers need to create house environment which facilitate the family’s lifestyle as well as to surpass the root of orchardist way of living which has strongly connected with nature to every descendent of the family.

Thus the design was aimed to create physical space and environment to maintain strong family engagement which greatly relies on “Kong’s” mental and physical health. “TAI-TOON” – the opened ground floor, “CHAAN” – the large wooden terrace, courtyard, garden and “SA-LA”- a small pavilion were arranged to obtain cool air from canal and lagoon surrounding 3 sides of the plot. This important space was taken to mean “Jai-Baan” – the heart of the house that supports various family activities with love and happiness.

As well as elevating ground floor above the high water level with the arrangement of “TAI-TOON”, wooden terrace and “SA-LA”. In addition, passive design strategies were principally integrated into the design of the house. For example, the building orientation for good natural ventilation and reducing direct heat transfer, long roof overhang for shading which are the tropical architecture wisdom of the East.

The common space where all member of the family use together was arranged in the location connected to water feature which surround 3 sides of the plot to allow users to refresh and relax by feeling the power of nature while appreciating the true value of water through their everyday activities that bonding the family together. These were the designers’ measure to create an energy saving, environmental friendly architecture and the user’s awareness to take care of nature and environment.

The house made of wood to achieve the most efficiency use of natural resources, Floor, door and windows in each parts of this house was carefully designed. The designers had to carry out joints details not only on 2 dimensions drawing in office but they had to learn from actual construction work.
