We all have times when procrastination is the only way out. Close deadlines? Ah, they can wait until after the washing up is done. The car needs cleaning? After the dog has been walked, perhaps. A meeting to prepare for? Maybe when you've written half of a book.

We understand.

Part of beating this monster is admitting there's a problem – and identifying which kind of procrastinator you are. Once you figure out how to get out of this rut, your levels of productivity are sure to be on the rise in no time! So, here's a guide to help at home!

The Perfectionist

You take action immediately; sitting around isn't going to get anything (not even procrastination) done.

You must be surrounded by pristine working conditions: neat books, clean desk, clear head. Only then will the result of your task be up to your perfectionist standards. It's hard to race through your To Do list at home when there's a million other things to do in your study.

The Visionary

The visionary procrastinator usually takes action after they've had a cup of tea, taken a step back and looked at the bigger picture. They excitedly plan, dream big, think out of the box.

A procrastinator of this kind can spend hours contemplating his or her plans; considering how, say, this colour of paint would look on that wall, or how many times can they spin around on this office chair until a big idea pops into their head. You might even be looking forward into the future, to when your current, nagging task is finally over and done with.

How to combat this? Make sure your environment is calm, neutral and quiet, to prevent big ideas from dominating completely – this is usually what stops you from getting your work done.

The Artist

You prefer to get stuff done promptly – but with your hands. In your procrastination you doodle, draw, knit, build. You create. As a result, you take a little longer to do things, but that doesn't mean the end result isn't 100% up to standard!

You may have important emails to send, but why write those when you can design a quilt or paint a landscape in your arty space? Keep your work environment colourful and kitschy, with plenty of crafty bits and bobs to hand. Use these things to create a beautiful but motivational poster that reminds you to focus on the boring bits of your job as much as the fun parts!

The Scientist

The scientist likes to be properly informed in order to make decisions, so they make plenty of time to look at everything as if under a microscope. They take time to gather all available information; anything that could possibly be important. They are meticulous in everything they do, but it just works for them!

Beat this meticulous procrastination by keeping everything hyper-organised. Stash reference books and papers in a carefully organised filing cabinet, to prevent falling into a knowledge quest that takes you farther and farther away from your original goal.

The Thinker

You're a tricky one. Although you wait until someone else kick-starts you, you are always thinking about the best way forward. Until you find your solution, you float from minor task to minor task, making yourself look busy.

And, hey, maybe this is the best time to learn a song or two on the ukulele, read a few chapters of a book, maybe learn a new language. But that won't get you any closer – it will just give your brain a break from thinking through your procrastination.

You simply need a space in which to think properly, like this beautiful little nook by Mukoyama architects! Shut yourself away for an hour or two, ponder away, and then return to the world to create your masterpiece.

The Sofa Lover

If you feel more inclined towards the sofa-loving type of procrastinator, don't be ashamed. It's perfectly natural! (At least, we hope).

You are the kind of person who retreats to the sofa because every day feels like a rainy day, so you couldn't possibly leave the house. You'd prefer to get cosy and curl up in a blanket on the couch and watch your favourite show. We get that! However, this isn't particularly helpful when you want to get your work done. Try designing a specific media area or zone in your home, which is kept separate from your work space. Hide away that distractingly cosy area, and only allow yourself to retreat to it when your work is done.

Procrastination is a pain, but it doesn't have to be a productivity killer! To increase your output, check out these super-stylish minimal work spaces!
