Parisdinterieur architects and designers are fairly prolific and well-known for giving chic, modern updates to Paris's older flats and houses.

Today, we are going to look at a small kitchen that was totally gutted and built back up again to become a stunning central social and culinary space. We begin with the stove top and sink sections, which are always the most difficult to perfect in a small kitchen.

The old stovetop

Here we have the stove top before completion, pictured here as nothing more than an extra counter space. It is fun to see the method in the prior madness here; colour strips had lain beneath, a brown mosaic tiling backsplash had reigned, and deep brown tiling covered the floors – a colour scheme that was far too dark for such a small space. Let's see how it's been given a fresh pep by the designers!

Stovetop supreme

The counter top has been elongated, an ultra modern electric stove and steel oven has been installed, topped by a stainless steel stove hood that provides a modish and on-trend gleam.

The counters have been built with a light mahogany that compliments the dark baby blue cupboards in a surprising but pleasing way. The cupboards themselves have a sheen that reflects both natural and artificial light, making this small space feel a bit bigger and more atmospheric.

Unrealised prospects

Prior to the renovation, this kitchen was completely dominated by the sink. Again, we have the brown tile backsplash, which makes the already cramped space look even smaller. The space's promise seems to lie in the potential for a new sink and perhaps some under-cabinet lighting? Read on to see what happened.

Space maximised

So, right off the bat, the designers have completely optimised this sink area – and the apartment's value – by adding a modern dishwasher and sink with built-in dry rack – both hot commodities in a the apartment market of a bustling European metropolis like Paris.

Additionally, the sea shell mosaic backsplash around the three walls of this space really adds shine and expanse.

Starting from scratch

Sometimes the best way to know what you need to do means cutting everything down to its foundations, to the beginnings so that you can redraw a map and know what you have to work with.

Parisdinterieur knows about this. Here, we see they've left nothing but the bones - wires, outlets, sheetrock and the original tile flooring. What, we wonder, will the final product be from here?

Wow – what a change

So, things have changed a bit. Immediately wow-worthy spots include the new mosaic floors and the very unexpected-but-welcome breakfast nook along the right wall.

The blue pinwheel flower design on the floor feels classic, and will be able to withstand a variety of changes in cabinetry or countertop styles.

Smart and serviceable is what this kitchen needed and, with the nook, that is exactly what it has got. Since this is a small urban apartment, the added countertop will likely be used for dining, socialising, working and cooking.
