At this point we think it’s safe to say that summer is in full swing. The days are still getting longer, the streets are lined with happy pedestrians, and it’s finally possible to walk outside without having to take any precautions against the cooler temperatures. Life is good.

This season is certainly an energising one, and it can often inspire us to change elements of ourselves – and our homes - for the better. In terms of interior décor, we might consider shedding those heavy textiles and colour schemes that were cosy in winter but stifling in the summer heat. Maybe the summer months finally afford us the gusto to declutter and rearrange our interior spaces to allow for the better flow of energy and light.

Perhaps you are feeling ready to change something about your home to reflect the essence of summer, but are not quite sure what. A little inspiration never hurt anyone! That’s why we’ve created this list of seven ways you can create a summer holiday feel at home.

Light colours on walls and floors

Warmer, heavy tones can help a room feel insulated and cosy in the cooler months of the year, but they will only bring about sensations of claustrophobia when the temps rise and the sun emanates inside at full force. Best to keep things as light and airy as possible during the summer months.

At the very least, swap out heavier textiles for sheer ones, eliminate excess clutter, and keep your walls light if you choose to paint them.

Large French windows

To cultivate the feel of a holiday spent on the European countryside, consider opting for some French windows or doors when looking for a new home. With the help of an architect or contractor, it may be possible to include some French windows in an extension or renovation project as well.

While it may seem a bit extravagant to incorporate French windows into your home simply to add a summery feel, rest assure that French windows look equally as gorgeous during all four seasons – imagine watching a storm during rainy season!

Outdoor furniture inside

Replacing your entire living room furniture set in the summer is somewhat of a costly and drastic move. Instead of doing that, try swapping them for some budget friendly, lightweight outdoor furniture.

These items, which are often made of natural materials like wicker or other kinds of ocean reeds, are undeniably summery in appearance and form. No doubt, they will do wonders to create a more relaxed vibe.

With colourful accessories

While it’s best to keep the walls and floors lighter in tone, we encourage you to incorporate some fun and colourful accessories. Wall art, string lights, accent pillows, colourful curtains, and light fixtures are all viable options in this regard.

These items will invite summer cheer and vivacity into the home. You could go with a nautical colour theme or a sun-inspired palette, like the one featured in this room.

Combine vintage with design

To cultivate that breezy, relaxed summer vibe, don’t be afraid to mix and match furnishings. This will help your abode to achieve that carefree, lived-in feel that distinguishes a home from a house.

There are countless ways to go about doing this, but we love this mixture of vintage and design items on the balcony. The antique armoire serves as a striking backdrop for these trendy designer chairs.

With summer flowers on the balcony

Make this summer the time when you finally get the most out of your balcony. No matter its size, an outdoor balcony or terrace is a true blessing. One way to make it more inviting is by adding some potted summer plants of your choosing.

Lots of things are in bloom during the summer months including daisies, marigolds, dahlias, sunflowers, pineapple lilies and more. If you’re challenged for space, go vertical with your garden by purchasing some hanging pots or planters.

DIY summer elements

Redoing your home to enhance its summer appeal doesn’t have to burn a hole in your wallet. One way to remain cost effective in your new decoration scheme is to try your hand at a couple of DIY projects. Some options that may appeal to even the most creatively challenged beginner include DIY curtains and DIY pillowcases. There are plenty of easy-to-follow patterns for these online.
