If you love design and styling and interior design, you will have heard of “industrial style”. But, do you know what this actually means? Industrial style refers to a trend in interior design where e.g. old fabrics and storage depots were given a new purpose as e.g. bars, restaurants and houses.

This got so popular that more people wanted to introduce it, even though they weren't living in an old, restored house. Therefore, more and more elements got integrated that add the rough, unpolished look to the interior. Here you will find some elements and ideas that bring the finishing touch to your decoration.

Visible tubes

One element everybody surely recognises from modern cafés and offices are the visible silver tubes at the ceilings. While there are sufficient ways to hide these, some opt to keep them in sight – just like they used to be in old fabrics. Many times the tubes deliver fresh air, being connected to the airconditioning, but in some cases their are only to complete the image with no function at all. In the photograph you might notice the grill that suggests a use of air. The interior design of this restaurant is made for a lawyers office in Rotterdam.

Surprising materials

In modern interior design the term has grown and widened and refers not only to old buildings restored to new glory. It is now referring to the interesting and surprising use and mix of materials within a space. These usually include 'raw' materials like glass, steel, wood and concrete. In this bar you can find some of the elements, although the tubes at the ceiling are the most eye-catching.

Unequally

Can a penthouse be industrial? Well, most penthouse apartments are not restores fabrics, but obviously you can add industrial elements. Here the element is the floor, or more precisely the unequally distributed paint on the floor which add an edgy look to this modern space.

Flexible elements

In this penthouse, the designer has followed the lead of the industrial window-look with the divided pane of glass. He has chosen to add more flexible elements to include in his design. It is in the steel hair needle chair legs and the simple table legs which add the little extra as well as the thick wooden table. The subtle light bulb with the metal light safety also adds up to the industrial style.

Incidence of light

The view is almost stealing the show of these beautiful lamps that hang like raindrops from the ceiling. Ever since the industrial look became trendy, pure light bulbs have become popular. While before a simple bulb was a sign of poor living conditions, it is now a fashion item. One can only imagine how this romantic dining place will light up light stars in the sky at night time.

Bricks and stones

Raw materials are one core element of the industrial look. Leaving one wall entirely or partly brick-lined is therefore very popular and a tool added to the ambiance of the room. Here it is matched with a carpet in used look and a black-and-white photograph.

Inside out

Talking about surprising elements, this living room is maybe not the first to jump to your attention. What is surprising is the use of the inside and the outside livingroom-zones. They are clearly marked and separated by colours as well as materials (and the huge glass door of course) and still complement each other. The concrete ceiling seems to give as much shelter and protection as the wooden joists.

Modern

Talking about industrial you will recognise various eye-catching elements here. There is the brick-lined wall, the unequally painted wall and the spots that seem to be coming from a fabric hall. Together with the modern furniture, a very different look is created.

Simple decoration

Simple, plain decoration adds to the industrial look, since fabrics weren't heavily decorated either. A simple wooden trunk serves as a side table, the couch has a matt colour that makes you think of concrete. But the real show of this livingroom is the wall behind which creates the energy of this room. If painted like this on purpose or left from former users; the brownish colour and the uneven paint distribution create a very special look.

3D urban garden

This hanging garden is one of the top designs of Deev Design, who draw this astonishing bathroom concept. Not only does the drawing shine vivid and photo-like, it is also an extremely modern and creative design. Next to the obvious hanging garden that frame the mirror, there are the wooden blocks that hold the wash hand basins. Very plain, natural colours complete the image.

Soft metal

Another very common and loved material for an industrial look is copper. The colour is very exquisit and it's therefor often used for decor items.

Surprising elements

Do you want your bathroom to be different? Then don't shy away from restoring and using old machines in everyday utilities. This old farming machine is used as a support for the hand wash basin. This element of raw wood and traditional craftsmanship is well combined with the brick floor.

Light distribution

Industrial look in your bedroom is less common. Maybe because industrial  and all associations are not especially cosy. For a subtle integration of the industrial look in your bedroom, it is possible to opt for the famous betonlook wallsand add light-tubes.

Useful decoration

Old furniture adds the special look and feel to an interior. Nothing can top a simple wood-and-steel chair that completes the interior design of your bedroom or living room. Other than chairs, traditional farming equipment can be interesting (watch out that it doesn't become too much farm house style) or old metal lockers are great.

Since industrial style usually doesn't have to much stuff, see that won't just serve as dust catchers but that decoration that can be put to use.

Glass & steel

The ultimate room divider is glass. When combined with a steel frame, it becomes a see-through wall. It doesn't only add the industrial, rough element to the room, but also helps visually separating different areas of the living space. It can divide a corner to create a cosy, warm couch-corner where it is possible to relax without disappearing completely. This kind of divider could also be handy for play-corner for kids or waiting or meeting areas in offices.

Rough diamond

Very old, rough elements make your space and give it the little extra. In this case it seems to be the other way around: judging by the wall, the joist and the sliding door, this building has been renovated completely. To maintain some of the original feel and style, some grand elements have been left. The matching colours of the lamps and the floor tiles support this and make the door attract even more attention.

Depending on your angle, you might say that this is more farm house style than industrial interior design, but if you judge by raw materials, natural colours and surprising elements than this qualifies most certainly.

Industrial size

Most people do not have the space of an old fabric. On the opposite, most houses and flats are rather small and lack the grandeur of old buildings with lots of history, high ceilings and monumental elements that can be integrated. Still, that does not mean that the industrial look is only meant for rich people who can afford the right kind of building. The industrial look can be implemented in the tiniest of home, when matching together the right kind of material, elements and colours. There is no need for space, if you learn how to put the right elements in the spotlight.
