From space planning and functionality to visual style, there are certainly numerous factors to consider when designing a dressing room / walk-in wardrobe. That’s because these spaces usually present far more nooks, crannies and curious corners than other interiors, yet the basic design rules (i.e. appropriate lighting) still apply.

But don’t fret. With our helpful guideline, you’ll be inspired for an updated dressing room much sooner than you imagine…

1. Is light or dark cabinetry best?

That depends on the style and colour palette of your home. For best results, choose the colours that you will want to look at for a long time and won’t have you reconsidering new cabinet colours within a few months.

homify hint: Match your cabinetry to that which is already existing in the home, like your bedroom/kitchen cabinets, for consistent style.

2. Should I pick natural or synthetic material?

That depends on your budget. Timber and wood can be the more costly options when compared with laminate. However, it’s essential that your dressing room / walk-in wardrobe matches your bedroom’s look. Thus, if you’ve already started with a high-end look to complement your bedroom’s design, do follow through.

3. Are cabinetry handles too much?

They can be, particularly if you’ve gone for the contemporary design style where soft-push doors/drawers are the norm. But if your interiors are more of the classic style, then we advise sticking with beautiful handles in appropriate metals and finishes, like brushed bronze.

4. What type of lighting is best?

LED lighting on sensors can help cut down on your energy bill. Plus, as it really doesn’t emit much heat, these lights are also appropriate for narrow spaces, like wardrobes or hallways.

homify hint: Warm lighting is best for viewing clothes, as it’s softer on the eye and can also contribute to the longevity of your fashionables (too-strong light can easily damage clothes over time via discolouring and even burning).

5. Where do I place the lighting?

With the proper placement, your dressing room’s lights can establish a very certain mood/vibe of elegance, charm, or whatever you prefer. And recessed lights, especially, work a treat at setting up an ambience when walking to your en-suite space.

homify hint: Ask your Lighting professional to have lights built into the bulkhead for a more timeless look.

6. Is a mirror necessary?

Yes, as it’s not only to check yourself out. The right mirror can also enhance a room’s visual space plus boost its illumination via reflecting light. And that’s why it’s recommended to place your dressing room mirror (full-length, if possible) at the end of the room/closet to create the illusion of space and light.

7. What’s the ratio of hanging space for drawers and shelves?

That depends: does your clothing consist of more tops or bottoms? Generally, closets and dressing rooms are approximately two-thirds hanging space and one-third shelving/drawers. However, as many homeowners have considerable shoe collections, a 50:50 ratio is not uncommon.

8. Must I consider the room’s temperature?

Does your wardrobe consist of costly pieces or ones crafted from certain fabrics? Then some airflow (especially for natural fabrics) is definitely advised. If your dressing room has a window, by all means open it regularly to combat the odd scent (especially with shoes).
