Living in the 21st century comes with a serious dose of technology in our homes, but it’s not always so easy hiding it (we mean the cables and wires) in-between furnishings and décor, is it? No problem, at least not when it comes to televisions, as today we’ll be helping you find the best spots for your flat-screen friend without compromising your living room’s layout or elegance.

Keep in mind these tips come from those who had to put them into practice, such as professional Interior Designers and homeowners.

1. Locate a power source

To cancel out a lengthy cord lying on your living room floor, find the closest power source to where you want to place your TV. Also take into account the room’s windows and how much glare you’ll be getting on that screen.

2. How high to mount / place it

The centre of your television screen should be at close to the viewer’s eye level as possible. Of course various factors come into play here, such as the height of the viewer and the TV’s size. However, 106 cm above the floor is just about perfect for viewers seated on a normal couch.

3. The ideal distance

This calculation is your TV’s size divided by 0.55. For instance, if you have a 42” television, the ideal viewing distance would be 76 inches (equalling about 193 cm). For a bigger one, like 55”, the perfect distance comes in at 100 inches (about 254 cm).

4. Choose a focal point

Position your television in the centre of the seating area if it’s the room’s only focal point. But if you have another attention-grabbing feature, such as a mantel or stunning window, maybe move the TV to the wall adjacent to said focal point so that it can still be viewed comfortably.

5. Hiding your TV

Some homeowners love the option of hiding their television at a moment’s notice, such as when entertaining friends or hosting a formal soiree. For this, we recommend placing your TV in a cabinet or armoire with closable doors.

Just ensure said doors can easily be opened and closed if you have children in the home who will be using it.

6. Integrating your TV into the space

On the other hand, some people like the idea of integrating their TV into the rest of their living room’s design. In these cases, the television is usually placed on a bookcase and surrounded by books, pictures, and other accessories.

If you’d like to integrate it even more, surround it with a wall gallery of photographs in black frames similar to your TV’s.

7. Flipping it

What about having a smaller TV in the kitchen, home office, or other room? In this case, we recommend purchasing one that can be mounted under cupboards and flipped up or down as required.

8. Your TV and the mantel

Many designers and decorators agree that a television should never be placed on or above the mantel. And if you follow the rule of thumb which states it shouldn’t be higher than the regular viewer’s eye level, you’d agree with them. Another reason for this is because a fireplace mantel is already an eye-catching feature in a room, and putting a big, black screen right in the middle of it can distract from its visual appeal.

However, televisions on mantels is quite the trend at the moment. Our recommendation would be that if you were to go with this option, rather mount a flat-screen to the wall instead of having it balance directly on the mantel – just for safety’s sake.

TV or no TV, we have these 8 ideas to enhance your kitchen’s luxuriousness quickly and stylishly!
