From Cairo comes our newest inspirational piece, this time from Saif Mourad Creations, a leading architectural firm. Focused on providing top-notch results to clients in the residential- and commercial fields, Saif Mourad Creations was founded in 2017 by Saif Mourad Fahmy, a young Egyptian architect who’s passionate about innovative and fresh ideas.

Together with his team of similarly energetic architects, Saif Mourad Fahmy has managed to sign off on over 50 projects – and that has just been in less than two years.

Part of the company’s expertise is also a dedication to interior design and landscaping, which aids in Saif Mourad Creations’ ever-growing list of top-notch projects and satisfied clients.

Today, we sneak a peek at one of the firm’s latest creations: a residential building designed to ensure first-rate comfort and style (as well as various degrees of privacy) for people in Mecca, one of the most sacred cities in Saudi Arabia.

Bringing all the goods

The Mecca Residence is a building rising up to five storeys, ensuring supreme cityscape views for its residents (especially those fortunate enough to claim the top areas).

It houses nine apartments and a duplex, as well as an underground parking zone equipped to keep 12 vehicles safe.

Two internal courtyards with vertical gardens on each floor have also been included in the final design.

Sublime living spaces

On the ground floor, the Mecca provides two apartments and a studio. A typical floor contains three apartments, with each varying between 150 and 185 m².

As per the client’s brief, a duplex for his own family was requested – an open space full of light that could be enjoyed for years to come.

On the duplex ground floor, the professionals divided the layout into a semi-public open half, with the second part being the private one for the client. The semi-public part is dedicated to spaces where the client can receive guests (such as the dining room), a double-height living area, as well as a Majlis (a living area for men only).

A roof garden with a small splash pool has been added to the upper floor of the duplex, ideal for social gatherings.

Stylish and practical

Super functionality was also taken into consideration for this project, as every shape, space, and indoor circulation is shaped by the habits and traditions of the inhabitants.

For extra privacy, the exterior-facing windows are able to retract, also ensuring a space for plant boxes. This adds depth and also helps to improve environmental quality.

A touch of greenery

Along with adding color, the courtyards were also included to enhance thermal comfort inside the living spaces. They also aid in maintaining the residents’ privacy while ushering in extra natural lighting.

The choice of materials

As the modern design style usually does, this project kept its choice of materials very simple: concrete forms the main portion, with wood, perforated clay bricks, and charcoal-black steel frames completing the look.

The steel frames, perforated clay bricks, as well as the various shades of materials and potted plants all contribute to a visually striking look. Yes, it is undoubtedly modern in appearance, especially due to the strong lines and neutral tones, but it is also soft and welcoming.

Visually pleasing and comfortable

The exterior façade of the building has a “double skin” – it consist of glass windows on the inside, and perforated walls of brick and greenery on the outside. Thanks to the perforated bricks, an amazing game between light and shadow is ensured on the inside throughout the day. Simultaneously, it provides a more comfortable environment for the residents.
