Knowing how to adjust your air-conditioner settings can save a lot of energy and money in the long run, especially if you have more than one air-conditioner in the house. Air-conditioner settings such as the timer, auto and fan mode can actually help to cool down your home more efficiently while reducing electricity bills as well. All you need to do is to take some time to familiarize yourself with the air-conditioner settings. This is much simpler if you haven't lost the instruction manual, but even if you have, it doesn't take long to figure out what the buttons on your air-con remote do. Today we're here to give you a little extra guidance on how to make the air-conditioning in your home more efficient and also save money on electricity bills. Just follow the simple tips below and you'll soon be an expert!

1. Check the options for the fan mode

Most air-conditioning units have at least 3 different fan modes – low, medium and high. The best option to use to cool down your house effectively depends on the climate. If it is very humid, then it's best to choose the low fan mode as it will slowly and regularly circulate the hot air through the air-conditioner, dehumidifying the air more efficiently. However, in most cases when it is hot, it is best to choose the high fan mode. For more ideas, have a look at our article titled  how to save energy with air conditioning.

2. Redirect the vents

Redirecting the vents can help to direct the cool air towards the room. It's best to redirect the vents to the center of the room if you find that the vents are directed towards one side. If your air-conditioner has an oscillating setting, you can use it as an additional way to direct the cool air properly. It's no use if cool air is directed towards the windows or the door.

3. Use the auto energy-saver function

Most modern air-conditioners have an energy-saving option. It's sometimes labelled as 'auto', 'smart fan' or 'energy saver'. So instead of setting the temperature yourself, next time try pressing the auto button and see if the room cools down to your satisfaction. 4. Inspect the filter

Make sure to inspect the filter of your air-conditioner regularly as a dusty or dirty filter means that the air-conditioning unit won't be cooling down the room as efficiently anymore. The added wear and tear a dusty filter causes may also damage it in the long-run.

Most modern air-conditioning units have a special indicator light that switches on when the filter needs to be cleaned. However, if you air-conditioning is not working properly, then the indicator light may not work as well, so make sure to check the filter manually every month if you're using it regularly. 5. Set the timer

Although it's nice to return to a cool home, leaving the air-conditioner on when you're out most of the day seems like a waste of a lot of energy and money too. The better option is to use the timer settings. Most modern air-conditioning units have a timer where you can set the exact time you want the air-conditioning to turn on. This way you can just set it to turn on just 20 minutes before you reach home, so that the house is nice and cool by the time you reach home. This option can also be helpful if you want to cool down the house for your pets.

6. How low to set the temperature?

Always remember that you can use the fan mode to help cool the room down without using as much energy. The fan mode can cool down a room about 4 degrees so you don't have to set the air-conditioner as low as you might think. Always try using a higher temperature with fan first before lowering the temperature. This simple habit can help to save lots of money and energy in the long-run.
