Flooring and walls play a significant role in creating a beautiful home. It sets the foundation of the interiors as much as sweeping ceilings and efficient layouts do. One good option for both floors and walls are tiles, which are durable, low-maintenance and easy on the eyes.

While the shape, color and design of the tile are very pertinent details, it’s also important to select the right way to position the tiles in the room. There isn’t much attention placed into tile laying patterns, but tiling professionals can attest that it’s just as essential as any other design element. In fact, it can be key in tying together the entire look of the room.

Take a look at Homify’s six examples and get to know the different ways modern tiles can enrich the home design. Whether you prefer tiles staggered or aligned, one of the styles below could be part of your house in the future.

1. Straight laying pattern

Tile laying patterns for tiles as large as 30 x 60 cm are quite simple as they’re most efficiently laid out in a parallel design. This consists of arranging the tiles in straight lines in a pattern that somewhat resembles a grid. The classic installation technique is particularly popular for square tiles.

The sleek featured bathroom above shows the harmony and balance that can be achieved by laying tiles in this manner. While this straight laying pattern can be prone to cracking over time, it’s certainly the simplest to achieve and the layout is timeless. It can even be done without the help of professionals, although the quality might suffer without one.

2. Brick laying pattern

Nearly as common as the straight tile laying pattern is arranging the brick-like tiles in the same way one would do a brick façade. The method is quite simple with the tiles staggered in such a way that each tile’s edge is aligns with the exact center of the tiles above and below it. While straight-forward enough to be a DIY project, it can be challenging as a minor mistake in aligning the tiles will result in the entire row being off-kilter.

The tiles that are often applied in this classic pattern are dubbed metro or subway tiles as they were popularized in subway stations before making their way to industrial-style bathrooms and kitchens. These have been used in the exteriors and interiors in the past few centuries, but several techniques are applied to make the design more modern.

3. Wood-inspired tiles in vertical installation

Tiles are more associated with flooring, but vertical tile installations are also becoming more popular. Wooden-hued tiles, as shown in the photo above, can exude warmth and a welcome atmosphere. The natural colors enriches the bathroom setting with a simple but tasteful design. It’s made even more elegant with candlelight and little modern touches.

4. Herringbone pattern

The eye-catching herringbone pattern has the tiles arranged at a 45-degree angle facing each other, so that it creates an upside-down V pattern. It’s quirky, attractive and particularly suited to smaller rooms where it can truly stand out as the main design flourish.

This can be tricky to pull off by yourself, but it’s a great technique that is great on any room. In the example above, the designer used the classic pattern on the wall with different-colored tiles that produced an gray-scale ombre effect on the entire wall. Since the wall is complex enough, you can pair it with more straight-forward design pieces and solid colors.

5. Partial tiling

One innovative approach to tiling is not to cover all of the walls or the entire flooring. Using tiles for only a section of the room can be a good way to mix up the design of the area. Partial tiling is usually utilized in bathrooms where tiles are limited to the areas that get wet such as the shower, bathtubs and/or sinks.

Aesthetic value isn’t the only reason for opting for this type of tiling. This method is also more affordable, since less tiles are necessary. Since fewer pieces are needed, more resources can be allocated to buying higher quality ones.

6. Original

While there are traditional tile laying patterns, there are no rules to design. Homeowners who are more bold can absolutely throw the guidelines out of the window and take a more playful approach to tiling. Be inspired by these trends and adapt your own take to tile laying.
