Trends play an important role in architecture and the features we see in our homes today. They create inspirational moods for the industry and how the spaces we occupy influence our daily lifestyle. These new ideas and ways of designing have the potential to stay relevant for decades to come or simply fade away in a matter of time. Below we discuss five trends in modern architecture we just can’t seem to ignore.

Open Concept

Over the decades we have seen a serious transition from what was known as ‘traditional’ space planning to a more fluid type of living. In residential architecture, we see more of the open space concept; moving away from having individual rooms for specific uses and tearing down walls to create one large living space. It has created a more casual and free type of living, encouraging connectivity and an interactive element between spaces and people. Before, the kitchen had doors (traditionally considered a working zone), dining rooms were formal and living rooms were for entertaining or relaxing with family.

Though this concept may cause a bit of discomfort due to its openness and lack of privacy, the layout brings about some benefits in everyday living. It’s great for entertaining; the combination of the living room, kitchen and dining room, allows flow in interaction especially when hosting family and friends. It is great for small families with young kids as it allows parents to easily monitor their kids when preparing meals or performing other household tasks. For architectural and design purpose, the open space works really well in allowing the flow of natural light to penetrate into all areas without obstructions. It makes the smallest space feel bigger, brighter and modern hence it’s easier to achieve multifunctional room designs.

Nature Indoors

Modern architecture seeks to connect with nature by incorporating indoor plants in creative ways throughout the spaces. Plants do more than just complete your décor, they breathe life into interiors and offer a positive impact on human health by filtering the air and providing a relaxing aspect in a very sophisticated and appealing way. When we talk plants in modern residential architecture, we do not refer to ordinary potted plants; the new trends see the use of vertical gardens with vines creeping up the walls or an indoor courtyard with tall trees shaded by a skylight.

An increased number of high-end properties featuring a less structured approach to design have gained footing in the architectural and design world, allowing nature to co-create gardens and walls and offer an interaction between the outside and the inside. It’s all about nature inspired design with new trends in architecture and exploring ways we can live with nature even in the inside.

Larger Windows

Gone are the days of cookie cutter windows, dark and dull interiors. Simple and clean large windows are the hallmark of modern architecture. Modern glass architecture adds elegance while seamlessly connecting with the environment around it. Houses built with large windows know no boundaries and enhance modern interior design. Large windows transform living spaces and beautify architectural designs. This also allows light to flow in and spill over the entire space making it feel spacious and bright. This plays out well on the outside as well; glass creates an exterior mirror where you have the reflection of the sky and the picturesque natural surroundings bounce off the glass walls. Advancements in window energy performance allow this to happen and has become cheaper and more accessible over the years.

Transformable Spaces

With modern architecture, homes are including design layouts that can be effortlessly altered for different uses. Architects are designing flexible rooms that have less defined purpose. A space can easily transform into a new area without a complete renovation or even breaking the bank. This trend in architecture makes living simpler and maximizes space usage in urban dwelling. The space can be rearranged into various positions depending on personal needs. For example, the bathroom can be designed in a way that it houses elements found in a spa – or an outdoor area that can be used as a lounge room.

Smart Homes

Digital technology is becoming increasingly part of modern residential architecture with smart gargets riding a new wave in innovation. This features new smart gadgets that you can connect to your Smartphone to accomplish things like designing your lighting, heightening the security of your home and managing the home more sustainably. These innovative features convey an enhanced sense of comfort for modern conveniences. It’s a trend with more promising advances that will ultimately influence the interaction between people and their environment as well as the use of intelligent devices.
