March has rolled around already, and the weather has started to heat up! Pretty soon, the sun is going to be at full strength, and our houses are going to need a little more protection from everything this tropical climate throws at it.

As we all know, wind and rain do not make the heat any less pervasive, and the scorching sun doesn't lessen the impact of the driving rain! That's why we've created this list of 8 ways to block the weather from impacting your home. These ideas allow you to control the temperature of your home, whilst also protecting it from the wilder elements of the region and not blocking off any doors to outdoor spaces.

Every home has it's own set of needs and requirements, so we've included transparent, opaque, UV resistant, flexible and retractable options in our list. At the end of the day, your home is as unique as you are, so it makes sense to search out the canopy that is the perfect fit. Take a look at these eight options and see how they measure up…

1. Clear rain curtains

There's nothing more luxurious than sitting outside on your very own terrace, but why should the fun be spoiled when it starts to rain? In fact, it's just as nice to sit outside and listen to the raindrops fall – just make sure that your terrace is adequately protected.

Transparent rain curtains are made of canvas and can be pulled out or retracted when needed. This allows your terrace to be open to the elements when the sun is shining, but as soon as the storm clouds gather you can flick a button and stop the rain from splashing into your home. This is particularly helpful if you have expensive outdoor furniture on your porch. The canvas also has vents that allow air to flow through, which regulates the heat and stops the sealed area from becoming too stuffy.

2. Roller blinds

Everyone loves light-filled rooms and large windows, so a conservatory is high on many homeowners' wishlists. However, the tropical Malaysian climate can often turn these rooms into tiny glass heat prisons. It's no fun sitting in a sweat lodge when you're trying to relax, so how can you beat the heat?

Rustic roller blinds are the perfect solution. Install them on the outside of your large windows so that when the sun is at it's brightest, you can simply step outside and let them down. They also protect your glass from dirty rain streaks too – result!

3. A huge canopy

If there's one thing your garden needs, it's an oversized canopy. Come rain or shine, a huge canvas covering will protect you and your family from the elements and allow your garden to thrive.

Pop this canopy over an outdoor dining table when you're entertaining to ensure that lunch doesn't get spoiled by rain or sunburn. Make sure the canopy is positioned close to the doors and windows, though – this way it will act as a barrier and stop the sunlight from heating up the inside of your home.

This kind of canopy is super easy to put up – it extends like an umbrella from one single pole which is then anchored into the ground. It's both budget and family-friendly!

4. Curtains or blinds

Homes that feature a lot of glass will need to install curtains or blinds to protect the inhabitants from the glaring sun. However, it can be hard to know which option to choose.

Vertical blinds, like the ones seen here, are an ideal way to control the amount of light and heat that comes into a home. They are flexible and effective, and they are available in many different materials – such as aluminium, PVC and synthetic fibres – to suit a range of needs and budgets. Just ask a professional for advice!

5. Slatted shades

These slatted wooden panels almost form a new wall of the house. They enclose and protect the outdoor living space from heat and rain, and keep the rest of the house cool by reducing the light flow.

Further back, we can see that this home also uses bright white curtains to block and reflect the sun rays at the hottest part of the day, which allows the homeowners to enjoy their glass walls whatever the weather.

6. Reinforce that glass

Don't flip out! These glass panels, designed by Sunflex Aluminiumsysteme GmbH in Germany, rotate inwards and outwards like doors depending on the weather.

On sunny days this room is open to the world. When it's raining, however, the panels flip shut and the room is sealed tightly against the water.

7. Fabric awning

A synthetic woven awning like this one is perfect for balconies and can last a lifetime. It protects residents from harmful sun rays, and also acts as a shelter against rain. Just make sure to install a retractable one in case a crazy storm comes along – you don't want it to be blown away!

8. A canvas mesh filter

This option is part greenhouse, part pergola, part conservatory… and 100% awesome! It doesn't look particularly protected, but if you look closely at the shadows you will see that a canvas mesh protects the roof. This stops the sun from heating up the roof, and also protects the glass from rain storms. It's the perfect modern terrace extension, and one that's ideal for our tropical climate, too!
