Many of us dream of having a balcony or terrace where we can sit back in a comfortable lounge chair and soak in the summer sun. Of course there are also many of us who were blessed with such home extensions and they let them go to waste by not furnishing them or simply ignoring them completely.

That's the story of the terrace we're viewing today. Don't fret–we're not here to tell you to clean up and furnish your terrace. We're sure you already know that. Instead, we will witness the staggering transformation of untapped terrace space to give you all the ideas you need to spruce up yours!

The interior designers and decorators at KELE voy a hacer took this transformation as an opportunity to focus on colour as the fundamental tool of change. This low-budget makeover was a simple one, yet tremendously effective, so we know you can achieve the same if you just put your mind to it.

So let's take a look and see how many ideas we can gather from this little outdoor entertainment area!

Before: the initial stage

This before picture speaks volumes to us. It looks like it could be anyone's terrace–the space is pretty well-kept, clean, and has a lot of potential, but the owners didn't manage to get all the benefits that a terrace offers on its own, so it became a dull and disregarded area. But it was certainly a very juicy slate for the designers, and as soon as they saw it, they came up with more than enough ideas to improve the look and feel of it.

After: an amazing change

As we said in the beginning, colour was the fundamental axis of the project strategy, since it has served to give the area a lot of vitality, good vibes and positivism. Nothing from the old, grey terrace remains in the new project, except for the lovely terracotta tiles, however. The use of colour in design always gives great results and is an aesthetic that is not expensive to achieve, since you can add colour to any terrace with flowers, fabric, and small decorative elements like candles, trays, or pots.

Flowers and plants: the fundamentals

A terrace without flowers and plants is something unimaginable for most designers, but especially these ones. With this project, the design includes plants and flowers in all corners and even has a vertical garden of artificial flowers located behind the chill out area for year-round beauty.

Colour combos

But choosing the type of flowers and colours is also something to keep in mind. From the beginning, it is necessary to choose the tone that the design of your terrace is going to be moved in, both by the light you want to get and by the colours that you like. Bright colours like this pink and purple spark creativity and bring life.

The cost

We can see that most of the furniture was made from pallets. The sofa for the chill-out zone was built with them that now occupies the entire corner of the terrace. Large mattresses were placed on white fabric pads that have been decorated with cushions of different sizes, colours and motifs, but always oscillating between pink, purple, blue and white. The carpet is another detail that we can not overlook, as it adds warmth to the terrace, making it pleasant even in winter.

Different fabrics

If colorful plants and flowers are fundamental in the design of a terrace, the choice of fabrics is something that should not be forgotten. The combination of different textures and colours helps to create varied and rich nuances. The fabrics can appear on cushions, as in this case, on carpets, blankets or sheets, and also on lamps and chairs.

Little details

These designers are famous for their love of small details, because they know that these are the ones that ultimately make the difference. And for this, you don't need a great deal of money, but to know to choose the best products, fabrics and furniture according to the requirements and investment that the client wants to make.

Bet on recycling

And speaking of money, if you do not have much of a budget, you could think about recycling old furniture or even giving other uses to things that at first glance do not look like they will serve it. That's the case with this box that was upcycled, given a fresh coat of paint, and turned into a lovely tea table.

In this full-view image of the terrace, you can see how far the recycling premise has been taken. The box is not the only piece of furniture that has been reinvented for another use. The sofa was made from pallets, as we mentioned, and the chairs and dining table you see in the foreground are the ones that were already here, but they look completely different thanks to the new cushions, and then the details that decorate the table.

For your dining pleasure

Here you can see the dining area that was relocated in more detail. The table and chairs that looked sad and boring before are now much more cheerful thanks to the introduction of colour in its decoration.

Think about the cold

In warmer climates, you can a terrace practically all year round thanks to good temperatures and the seemingly endless sunny days. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be prepared for colder weather, should it strike. The terrace should be well equipped with candles, nice warm blankets and maybe even a hat or two for unpredictable cold. And if you don't know where to keep them, you can do what these designers did and keep them in a beautiful wicker basket.

Colourful garland

And finally, to show you a beautiful detail of the design of this space: on the wall of the terrace we have a pallet board that has tangled plants and garland with coloured bulbs on it that all bring a lot of warmth to the space. Who said you couldn't get a new terrace with little money? The colours and the plants, as you have seen, are the keys.
