We here at homify believe that everyone has the desire to make their homes as comfortable and inviting as possible. In some parts of the world, there are even specialized terms dedicated to this concept, and when your culture places so much importance on comfort that a word stems from the idea, well that just raises its significance.

The difficult to pronounce but easy to explain principle of hygge is what we're talking about here. Coming from the ever-innovative Danes, hygge (pronounced 'hooga') is a word that roughly translates to cosiness, and in essence means creating such an environment, but that's not all this powerful word encompasses. The warm, dim glow of scented candles, friends and family–that's hyyge too. When you think about sitting around the table with the people that are closest to you discussing the important and the unessential things in life, well nothing is more hygge than that.

If this sounds just like the ambience you want in your home, we have a few tips to get you there! In this piece, we'll tell you the big and small changes you can make to make your home look cosy the hygge way. Even minor changes following these themes will help your space become more serene. So take note on what you like best and don't forget to let us know the results when you're finished!

1. Keep your decoration minimal

The first step to a cosier atmosphere is getting rid of all the overwhelming accessories in your home. The thing about hygge is that it's not only a design, it's a lifestyle that has helped Danish people really understand the importance of simplicity, time and adequate space to unwind, and slowing down the pace of life. Clutter will only interfere with the new beginning you're trying to establish.

2. Soft lighting

Nothing sets the comfy mood quite like mood lighting. Dim lighting has a way of soothing the soul and taking your mind off of daily annoyances.

3. Candles galore

Danish winters are long and rough, so the people fight the winter darkness with hygge and the millions of candles that go with it. Candles have a wonderful way of creating intimacy, fellowship, and comfort in the smallest everyday moments, so adding these accessories all throughout your home fosters cosiness and companionship.

4. A fireplace

Another thing you shouldn't go without is a fireplace–or if you don't have the funds to install one, wood burning stoves are the best alternative. Just imagine curling up in front of the warm embers, wrapped in your favourite blanket with a good book in hand and your significant other just within arm's reach. Now that's hygge.

5. Warm and fuzzy

Comfort doesn't just come from good company and mood lighting. One could say the biggest factor in creating a cosy atmosphere is the textiles. As we've mentioned, Danish winters are rough, so you'll see an abundance of (faux) fur throws and pillows scattered about each and every room in a Danish home.

6. Think about a reading corner

We all need cosy corners where we can retreat, so if you have the space and the funds, think about a reading nook. Bay windows like this provide optimal contentment.

7. Rock away your worries

Our last tip for a cosy home is a tiny addition and one that's sure to appeal to homeowners of all ages, and that is the rocking chair. What's more soothing than the feeling of being cradled and swaddled? Take inspiration from this image and place one of those super soft fur blankets over it for unmatched warmth and repose.
