The kitchen is the beating heart of any home, which is precisely why we need to take special care when designing and decorating it. The kitchen sees the most activity of any room, between cooking, cleaning, and stocking and restocking shelves, it's crucial that it's accessible, easy to use, and a calming and enjoyable space to be in. Unfortunately this all means it's one room where we're prone to make some serious mistakes in maintenance, design, and decoration.

Luckily we have the unparalleled expertise of the professionals here at homify to show us the error of our ways, and more importantly how to right the ship. That's why today we're looking at 13 common mistakes we've all made at one point or another, and discussing solutions. Some of these mistakes will take only a few minutes to rectify, while others may take a little bit of planning, but one thing's for certain, follow this simple guide and you can be sure your kitchen will look its best!

1. Decorating with fake fruit

Apart from its obvious practical use, a fruit bowl is a fantastic decoration for the kitchen, however sometimes you may be tempted to use fake fruit. While it may see low maintenance fake fruit actually attracts dust, and more crucially it looks tacky. Using fresh fruit will fill your kitchen with fantastic aromas, and because they will change with the seasons they are a dynamic addition to the decor.

2. Decorating preparation areas

While it may be tempting to put a large vase of flowers on the middle of the kitchen counter, you'll soon find that it's more trouble than it's worth. You can never have too much clear space on the counter for food preparation, and you'll find necessities like kitchen utensils and appliances are already vying for that valuable real estate, so save the decorations for nooks, crannies, shelves, and corners.

3. Too many cookbooks

We all love cookbooks, it's exciting to try out new recipes, and comforting to have a reference for the old ones, but how many of them are you actually using? Whittle down your collection to the ones you're flicking through frequently, and put the rest in storage, because they will simply clutter your kitchen.

4. Disordered appliances

If you get a new kitchen appliance for every birthday, then you already know how much space they can take up. Your counter should be reserved for only the most frequently used, such as toasters, kettles, and the coffee machine, the rest should be stored away somewhere out of sight.

5. Not keeping on top of the cleaning

The kitchen needs to be kept spotless, not just from an aesthetic perspective, but for the health and safety of you and your family. Make sure you're giving your kitchen a thorough clean as often as possible, because once it gets out of hand it will take hours of hard work to rectify.

6. Keeping expired goods

If you've lived in the same house for a couple of years, chances are you've accumulated an abundance of herbs, spices, and condiments that you used once before putting them back on the shelf for good. This takes up valuable space, and clutters the pantry, making it impossible to find anything when you need it. Take a look through the cupboards and get rid of everything that has passed its use by date, or that you're never going to use again.

7. Displaying all of your vintage utensils and dinnerware

We're sure that set of plates you inherited from your grandmother is beautiful, but you're better off keeping it somewhere safe for special occasions than putting it on display in the kitchen where it will get grimy and risks being broken.

8. Not enough plants in the kitchen

Plants are a fantastic addition to the home, yet they are rarely seen in the kitchen beyond a vase of flowers. We suggest filling your kitchen with fresh herbs so that you always have a fantastic garnish or seasoning on hand, and your kitchen always smells fresh and aromatic.

9. Open shelves

Open shelves are handy, and great for items you're reaching for everyday, but they also create visual clutter that can make your kitchen feel more messy than it really is. Instead use closed cabinets to keep food and items you rarely use out of the way.

10. Papers and documents everywhere

For some reason letters, newspapers, and other important documents always end up in the kitchen. Apart from the risk of ruining them with your morning coffee, it can bog down the kitchen, making it an unsettled and stressful place. Make sure that once you're done reading your mail you file it away somewhere safe, and away from the kitchen.

11. Too many baskets and bowels

Baskets and bowls can look quaint and sweet and are also practical, but like anything, don't overdo it or your kitchen will be overwhelmed.

12. Carpet in the kitchen

Carpet in the kitchen is going to collect all kinds of crumbs, spills, and stains, and it's just not practical. If you want a little bit of comfort in your kitchen for those cold winter mornings then use a rug that can be taken out and cleaned with ease.

13. Utensils scattered throughout the kitchen

This is mostly a storage issue. Ensure that you have a place for everything, because leaving utensils everywhere is as dangerous as it is unsightly.

There's no shame in these common errors, especially now that we know how to fix them! For more great tips check out this article on common decor blunders, and how to right them!
