Rapidly improving technology has given us some tremendous advances in the fields of architecture and interior decorating, the most crucial of which is being able to properly envision new designs. Hand drawn architectural renditions used to be the only way to gain some perspective on what a finished home would look like, and while many were beautiful in their own right, they don't always give us the most realistic impression.

Today computers can render different types of materials, textures, and colours, to provide a photorealistic image that allows us to see exactly what our homes will look like prior to final construction. The practical implications of this are huge, allowing architects and carpenters to pre-empt potential issues, but we think the best part is that we get a look at all of these fabulous designs.

Today we're going to take a look at 20 3D facades to get you inspired to go out and design your own home, so let's get into it!

1. The play of light

When a facade is made up of varying depths, it's important to consider how shadows and light will affect the appearance and functionality of the house. A good architect can use this to their advantage, as we can see here where the shadows only add to the interplay of shapes and patterns.

14. A linear construction

This closed facade alternates large windows with wooden panelling, which when combined with the trees gives off a summery holiday vibe. The fence at the front furthers the simple but very effective linear theme.

When you want to explore what it might look like to use more unique materials in your home design, the best bet is to use 3D rendering to get a good impression of how all of those different textures and colours will look together. Here we can see that the stone and concrete works really well with the sumptuous woodgrain on the lower floor.

16. A grand facade

The large palm trees bordering this home accentuate the linear form of the design, and elongate the appearance of the structure for a grand and impressive facade.

17. A discrete exterior

This is the ideal facade for someone who values privacy with an impervious brick front, complimented by a modern white level with minimal windows.

18. Volume and transparency

Exciting experiments in depth, lots of glass, and transparent bannisters for the terrace combine to provide a floating, gravity defying facade that is grounded only by the magnificent stone walls.

19. Light and levels

The exciting way the light plays off the different materials and levels of this building really contributes to the success of this chic design.

20. Glass panels and open spaces

With an elevated ground floor, slightly above street level, this home opens on to the street with a welcoming and modern facade. We can really see the benefits of 3D rendering here, with a multitude of volumes, materials, levels, and shapes all fully realised so that we can see exactly how this sophisticated design will manifest.
