This wonderfully unusual home was designed by Madrid-based architecture firm Manuel Monroy. Their designs reflect integrated environments where the man-made elegantly meets the organic; stone, clay, old shingles, slate boreal, quartzite, terracotta, and wood are common natural elements that are incorporated in their works. Alongside these materials, immaterial qualities are masterfully seized; the use of space and light making each of their designs unique and unexpected.

This home, we are touring today, is exactly that – a clever combination of materials and form, to manipulate the light and space in delightful ways. Let's take a look!

Low-slung roof

The low-slug gable roof is carried all the way to the ground. This dramatic roof plane faces the street, providing privacy, while the rectangular cut-out in the roof lets light in.

Protecting the interior under the dramatic porch, there is the impression that the home is hemmed in and safe. It appears almost like a mountain, welcoming one in through the immense glass face that appears beneath the roof.

The glazed mountain

The structure is made from beautiful natural timbers. The generous eave protection provided by the unusual roof formation means that the timber is protected from the elements: water, snow, and sun.

The large glazed facade facing the south allows for direct solar gain in the winter, while the deep eaves, projecting 3.6 metres, shelter the interior in summer like a tree canopy. The double pane windows also act to keep heat out in summer and retain it inside in winter.

Bedroom | porch

At the porch where the roof ends are slung to the ground, anchoring the home to the earth, is where the bedrooms are located.

These bedrooms occupy a single-height volume and each room has access to the porch through french doors. Eschewing steps, the transition between the inside and outside is seamless and smooth.

Open-plan, double-height living

The large double-height volume expresses the sloped roof on the interior, and houses this grand and loft living space. It forms the heart of the home where all of the social spaces come together in an open-plan layout.

The colour palette is neutral and refined. All of the furniture and furnishings strictly obey the neutral agenda, bar a few rusty orange cushions.

Brick, curves, and a dining space

At the outer edge of the living volume, an exposed brick wall separates the social space from the private functions beyond. A gentle curve is introduced and swoops through the space, dividing it softly and elegantly, allowing the dining area to spill into the greater living space.
